US MissionsChurch Planting Director Ed Russo
Paul in writing to the church said this: "Let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think." Romans 12:26 (NLT) As I read those words I realized that a change in thinking must precede a change in behavior or action. So in order for the church to become missional in her actions, she must become missional in her thinking. We must move from a "maintenance mindset" to a "missional mindset". Then and only then will we move from surviving to thriving. Then and only then will we effectively and aggressively see the advancement of God's Kingdom on this Peninsula. During a meeting in Springfield, our District Superintendent Terry Raburn was asked to set a goal of new churches. He set a goal for our district to start 40 new churches by 2020. With our current momentum I am confident we will not only reach but exceed this goal. I have prepared and presented to our district presbytery the "Peninsular Florida 40/20 Church Planting Initiative." That outlines this overall objective. Since our goal is not only new churches but healthy churches, our emphasis on helping our existing churches is enlarging also. We are changing the name Revitalize, to Church Development and expanding its efforts. Presbyter Mike Tedder will be assisting me by leading this initiative. This multi-month journey will be both practical and relational in nature. Along with this, Presbyter Duke Matlock is working with our sectional committees to bring Coach Training to each section/region of our district. If we are going to see the Kingdom of God advance on this peninsula, the challenge before us is to change the way we think. We must move from maintenance to missional, from surviving to thriving in our thinking. Our change in thinking precedes our change in behavior.
